Welcome to Big Whiteshell Lake

Big Whiteshell Lake, located within Whiteshell Provincial Park in southeastern Manitoba, Canada, offers a pristine natural retreat approximately 162 kilometers (101 miles) east of Winnipeg. The lake is accessible via Provincial Road 309, terminating at its scenic shores. This picturesque lake is nestled in a landscape rich with forested beauty and abundant wildlife, making it a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The route to Big Whiteshell Lake was originally constructed in the 1930s by workers from the Manitoba Home for Boys at Portage Le. Prairie endeavored to create a road through the Whiteshell Forest Reserve from Rennie to Green Lake. This initial development laid the groundwork for the further enhancement of the area, which continued into the mid-20th century. In 1957, recognizing the need for a larger campsite to accommodate their increasing number of scouts, the Manitoba Scout Association established Camp Alloway on a 118-acre tract of land offered by the provincial government at the southern end of Big Whiteshell Lake.
Big Whiteshell Lake is a popular local tourist destination renowned for its fishing, hiking, and other summer activities. The lake’s waters teem with various fish species, making it a haven for anglers. The surrounding areas offer numerous trails for hikers, providing challenging routes and leisurely walks through the lush forest. Camp Alloway continues to be a hub for scout activities and camping, fostering a deep connection with nature for generations of young adventurers.
The lake has also made its mark culturally. Manitoba entertainer Larry Clark, better known as Uncle Smokey, composed several novelty campfire songs while working in a fire lookout tower on Big Whiteshell Lake. These songs have become a part of the local heritage, reflecting the enduring spirit and charm of the area.
