Welcome to Huron River Chain of Lakes

The Huron River Chain of Lakes, located in Southeast Michigan, is a scenic and recreational haven comprising several interconnected lakes. These lakes span northern Washtenaw County and southern Livingston County. They include Big Portage, Little Portage, Base Line, Zukey, Strawberry, Whitewood, Gallagher, Ore, and Tamarack Lakes. Most of these lakes can be navigated by standard watercraft, while Ore and Tamarack Lakes are accessible only by smaller boats due to their narrower channels and shallower depths.
Big Portage Lake, the largest in the chain, covers 680 acres and has a maximum depth of 84 feet. It is followed by Strawberry Lake, which is 257 acres and has a depth of 64 feet. The lakes are connected by a series of no-wake canals, allowing seamless navigation from one lake to another. The typical navigation order is from Little Portage to Big Portage, Baseline, Whitewood, Gallagher, Strawberry, and Zukey.
The Huron River Chain of Lakes offers a wide array of recreational activities:
Boating: Known as “pontoon heaven,” the lakes are ideal for boating, including power boating, jet-skiing, and sailing. Canoes and kayaks are also popular, particularly in tranquil bays and inlets.
Fishing: Anglers can enjoy fishing for diverse species, such as bass, pike, and panfish, across the chain. The well-stocked lakes provide ample opportunities for casual and serious fishermen, promising an exciting and rewarding fishing experience.
Water Sports: Water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing are common on larger lakes like Big Portage and Strawberry.
The Huron River Watershed Council has developed a comprehensive Watershed Management Plan, a testament to our commitment to address key environmental challenges such as nutrient loading, altered hydrology, and sedimentation. This plan aims to restore and protect the water resources of the Huron River Chain of Lakes for future generations, providing a solid foundation for our conservation efforts.
The Huron River Chain of Lakes is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a blend of recreational activities, beautiful scenery, and well-maintained facilities. Whether you’re looking to fish, boat, or simply enjoy the natural surroundings, this chain of lakes has something for everyone.
