The community was initially referred to as “Highland Lake” by the United States Census Bureau from the 1990 to 2010 censuses, omitting the plural “s.” The area, originally rolling dairy farm hillsides, was developed in the 1930s as a summer retreat for families from the New York City metropolitan area.

Highland Lakes offers a variety of recreational opportunities:
Boating and Fishing: Members can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, row boating, paddle boating, pontoon boating, and small pleasure boating on the lakes. Battery-powered motorboats with a maximum speed of 10 mph are permitted. The lakes are annually stocked with fish, making them a year-round destination for anglers.
Swimming: Seven beaches are available, each staffed with lifeguards during summer. Swim lessons are provided at designated beach locations.
Athletics and Sports: The community offers facilities for various sports, including tennis, basketball, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Additionally, there are youth athletic programs and a swim team.
Hiking and Biking: The nearby Wawayanda State Park and Pequannock Watershed offer extensive trails for hiking and biking.
Highland Lakes is governed by the Highland Lakes Country Club and Community Association, a private entity that manages all properties and recreational facilities. Property owners must pay an initiation fee and annual dues to become members. The community is overseen by a 17-member Voting Board and supported by various volunteer committees.
Highland Lakes offers a unique blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and a strong community spirit. Its proximity to Wawayanda State Park and the Pequannock Watershed, as well as its extensive amenities and well-maintained facilities, make it ideal for both full-time residents and seasonal visitors.
