Welcome to Chippewa Lake

Chippewa Lake, formerly known as Chippewa-on-the-Lake, is a quaint village in Medina County, Ohio. It surrounds the natural inland lake of the same name, among Ohio’s largest natural lakes. The village, incorporated in 1920, had a population of 654 as of the 2020 census.
Chippewa Lake is derived from the Ojibwe tribe of Native Americans, also known as the Chippewa. In the 1880s, Oscar Townsend and the Cleveland, Lorain, & Wheeling Railroad developed a vacation resort on the lake’s banks. This resort, eventually named Chippewa Lake Park, became a popular destination. However, the Great Depression and the extinction of interurban rail service significantly impacted the park’s success. 1937, Parker Beach purchased the resort and operated it until its closure in 1978 after over 100 years of operation.
In 2008, the abandoned amusement park served as a filming location for the horror movie Closed For the Season, which was released in 2010. The park’s deteriorating attractions provided a unique and eerie backdrop for the film.
The village also hosts a large estate that was part of Oscar Townsend’s original holdings. This estate now operates as The Oaks Lodge restaurant, offering a glimpse into the area’s historical past.
Chippewa Lake covers a total area of 0.25 square miles (0.65 km²), all land. The natural lake enhances the village’s scenic beauty and provides a focal point for residents and visitors.
Recreational Activities
Chippewa Lake offers various recreational opportunities, including:
Boating and Fishing: The lake is well-liked for boating and fishing, and there is a lot of chance to catch native fish species.
