Welcome to Lake Ouderkerk

Lake Ouderkerk, or Ouderkerkerplas, graces the Amsterdam’ Green Belt’ of Amstelland with its shimmering presence. This artificial lake was created during sand extraction for highway construction on one of the renowned polders of North Holland. The process resulted in a 140-foot-deep sand pit, making it one of the deepest lakes in the Netherlands. Although it is considered a freshwater lake, seepage from the nearby North Sea imparts a slight saltiness, preventing it from freezing.
The lake is a popular spot for city residents about three miles from Amsterdam. The northern part of the lake, partially filled with concrete rubble, now features two swimming beaches with sandy sunbathing areas and playgrounds. A day camping area offers shelter and shade for visitors, while a water sports club provides opportunities for sailing, windsurfing, and other activities. A single boat ramp facilitates the launch of small sailboats, rowboats, canoes, and kayaks. Diving spots and deep areas make the lake ideal for various water activities, although motorized boating is limited to the southern parts of the lake.
Lake Ouderkerk is home to walleye, pike, perch, and zander species. However, fishing regulations often restrict access to members of fishing clubs, so visitors should check local rules and obtain the necessary fishing licenses. The lake closes from October 1st to April 1st to provide a sanctuary for large numbers of waterfowl that winter and nest here, making it a prime location for birdwatching.
Numerous walking, cycling, and equestrian trails surround the lake and connect to other paths in the area. These trails traverse the unique dikes and polders that characterize North Holland, offering scenic routes along the tops of many dikes. One popular path circles the De Ronde Hoep nature area, a 400-acre meadow bird sanctuary managed by the Landscape North Holland Foundation. This area, alongside Lake Ouderkerk, is a haven for bird enthusiasts.
The village of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is the only settlement on the lake’s shore. It boasts historic architecture, including several significant churches and the oldest Jewish cemetery in North Holland. In addition to exploring nearby sights like the Rieker windmill and a tourist farm featuring a petting zoo, guests may enjoy dining at various restaurants and cafes. The village is a favored destination for Amsterdam residents, often reached by boat cruises down the Amstel River or via the scenic walking and cycling paths.
Nearby, Amsterdam offers many cultural and recreational opportunities, including museums, historical sites, and vibrant nightlife. The city is a major cultural center thanks to its vast network of canals, museums like the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, and historical buildings like the Anne Frank House.
Lake Ouderkerk and the Amstelland region around it offer a singular fusion of man-made infrastructure and natural beauty. They are prime examples of Dutch inventiveness in land reclamation and water management. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility and recreational activities of Lake Ouderkerk while experiencing the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
