Brantley Lake, a reservoir on the Pecos River, is located within Brantley Lake State Park, approximately 12 miles north of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The lake was created by the construction of Brantley Dam in the 1980s, which replaced the old McMillan Dam. The primary purposes of the Brantley Project by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation were flood control, irrigation, fish and wildlife enhancement, and recreational opportunities.
In the Chihuahuan Desert, Brantley Lake State Park offers a desert oasis with diverse wildlife, stunning sunsets, and clear night skies ideal for stargazing. The lake is known for its warm water fishing, with largemouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, white bass, bluegill, and crappie species. The park includes boating, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the 2.6 miles of trails, while bird watchers enjoy spotting the many bird species that pass through the Pecos River valley.
Brantley Lake State Park also provides developed and primitive campsites, picnic areas, showrooms, and a group day-use area for family gatherings and events. Special events such as kite-flying and fishing contests occur throughout the year, making it a vibrant destination for outdoor activities.
