Beaver Lake, a picturesque freshwater lake in Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, is a cherished landmark within the Lakeview Park community, a subdivision of Asheville. This 50-acre lake, with a maximum depth of 28 feet, was created by damming Beaverdam Creek, transforming the area into a serene residential and recreational hub.
The concept for Beaver Lake began on January 19, 1922, when the Asheville Citizen-Times reported plans to develop a resort around Beaverdam Creek. The Lake View Park Company acquired 1,100 acres, envisioning an artificial lake, homes, hotels, and a golf course. Although initial construction was halted due to disagreements with the Asheville and East Tennessee Railroad, the project resumed after the railway’s bankruptcy in January 1923. The creation of Beaver Lake, flooding an area known as Baird’s Bottoms, brought a surge of real estate development, and the lake was stocked with fish for recreational fishing.
Architect John Nolen designed the community, now known as Lakeview Park, initially featuring Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival homes. During the 1920s, the area thrived, with amenities like a swimming pool and a golf course attracting residents and visitors. The Beaver Lake Country Club, established in 1921, became a public membership club in 1924 and was later renamed the Beaver Lake Golf Club.
The Great Depression stunted the community’s growth until the 1960s, following economic struggles in the 1930s and simpler post-WWII housing developments. Beaver Lake remains a serene residential area and a beloved spot for local recreation.
Fishing: The lake is full of different fish species, making it a popular fishing location.
Bird Watching: The 8-acre Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, owned by the National Audubon Society, provides a haven for bird watchers.
Boating and Swimming: The original swimming pool has been dismantled, but the lake still offers leisure activities in the water.
The area’s conservation efforts heavily rely on the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary. It protects the lake’s pristine beauty and provides a home for numerous bird species.
