The Chicago Lakes Trail, part of Denver’s Mountain Parks system, offers an engaging hike through the stunning landscapes of the Front Range. Nestled near 14,240-foot Mount Evans, these alpine lakes provide picturesque views within the Arapaho National Forest. Located about 38 miles west of Denver, the trail spans between Echo Lake Park and Summit Lake Park, under the joint management of the Denver Parks Department and the US Forest Service.
The Mount Evans Scenic Byway, the highest road in North America at 14,130 feet, is a major draw for visitors, allowing access to the summit during summer. This route offers spectacular mountain vistas, attracting both hikers and bicyclists. Echo Lake Park and Summit Lake Park, accessible by car, are popular for picnicking and camping, enhancing the hiking experience of Chicago Lakes.
The lakes themselves are only accessible by foot. The trail to Lower and Upper Chicago Lakes covers 9.8 miles round-trip, starting at 10,620 feet and reaching 11,740 feet. The initial mile is relatively easy, but the trail becomes steeper beyond Idaho Springs Reservoir. The Upper Lake, set above the Lower Lake, provides breathtaking views and is a favored spot for fly fishing.
The surrounding Mount Evans Wilderness allows dispersed camping, and hikers need a self-issued permit. Dogs are permitted if leashed. The trail is also popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Echo Lake Park offers primitive camping with some RV sites, but reservations are recommended due to limited space.
Echo Lake, a natural glacial lake, is known for its excellent rainbow trout fishing. At 12,840 feet, the area around Mount Evans and Summit Lake supports a unique alpine/tundra ecosystem with rare plant species and wildlife, including mountain goats. Summit Lake Park, a National Natural Landmark, is a prime spot for nature viewing, with many scenic walking paths.
The nearby Town of Idaho Springs provides a variety of accommodations, from hotels to guest cabins, making it an ideal base for exploring the Chicago Lakes area. Rich in mining history, Idaho Springs offers mine tours, hot springs resorts, and numerous dining and shopping options. The town is also a hub for outdoor activities like downhill skiing, whitewater rafting, and horseback riding, all set against the stunning Rocky Mountains.
