Sprawling across almost 9,000 acres in the Maine Highlands Region, Brassua Lake is a picturesque and relatively undiscovered natural lake. In 1925, a dam was constructed on the lower Moose River, forming the lake. The old Brassua and Little Brassua Lakes were combined into one large body of water, raising the water levels by about thirty feet. This pristine lake is surrounded by wilderness, with minimal shoreline development, making it a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Brassua Lake is situated near the well-known Moosehead Lake, only five miles to the west. The lake’s maximum depth reaches 65 feet, with an average depth of about 30 feet. Its shoreline stretches over 74 miles, creating a diverse habitat for fish and wildlife. The lake’s outflow, controlled by the Brassua Dam, feeds into the Moose River.
Recreational Activities
Fishing: Brassua Lake supports a thriving cold-water fishery, including brook trout, landlocked salmon, and smelt. The lake’s cold, clear waters are ideal for anglers seeking these species. Fishing is particularly popular during the ice-fishing season in winter.
Boating: While no large commercial docking facilities exist, a public boat ramp near the dam provides boaters access. The lake is suitable for small boats, canoes, and kayaks, offering a serene setting for leisurely paddling.
Swimming and Camping: The lake’s undeveloped shores provide excellent spots for swimming and primitive camping. A few commercial sporting camps and primitive campsites are managed by private owners and Moosehead Wildlands Inc.
The surrounding lands, previously managed by Great Northern Paper Company, are now under the stewardship of Moosehead Wildlands Inc. About 20% of the land is in conservation, while the rest is designated for public recreational use and limited development. The new management aims to preserve the lake’s natural beauty and accessibility while ensuring the sustainable use of its resources.
A hidden treasure in Maine, Brassua Lake combines outdoor enjoyment, scenic splendor, and conservation initiatives. Its pristine waters, abundant wildlife, and serene surroundings make it an ideal destination for those seeking a wilderness retreat. Whether fishing, boating, hiking or simply enjoying the tranquility, Brassua Lake provides an unforgettable outdoor experience.
