Welcome to Chandra Taal

Chandra Taal, meaning ‘Moon Lake,’ is a captivating high-altitude lake in the upper Chandra valley of the Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh, India. Nestled near the source of the Chandra River, the lake sits at about 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) in the Himalayas. Known for its crescent shape, Chandra Taal is surrounded by rugged mountains of scree on one side and enclosed by a cirque on the other.
Despite its bleak surroundings, Chandra Taal thrives in a protected niche, with blooming flowers and vibrant wildlife during the summer. It is a popular destination for tourists, trekkers, and campers. The lake is usually accessed from the Kunzum Pass, which separates the Lahaul and Spiti valleys. The road to Chandra Taal branches off from NH-505, about 2.9 kilometers from Batal and 8 kilometers from Kunzum Pass, leading to a parking lot 1 kilometer from the lake. From there, visitors must hike the final stretch to reach the lake.
Chandra Taal’s banks are adorned with vast meadows that come alive with hundreds of wildflower varieties in spring. Historically, the area north of Chandra Taal was known for its lush grass plains, frequented by shepherds from Kullu and Kangra, with large herds for grazing. However, overgrazing has since degraded these grasslands.
The lake is home to diverse wildlife, including the Snow Leopard, Snow Cock, Chukor, Black Ring Stilt, Kestrel, Golden Eagle, Chough, Red Fox, Himalayan Ibex, and Blue Sheep. Migratory birds such as the Ruddy Shelduck visit the lake during the summer. These species have adapted to the cold, arid climate, intense radiation, and low oxygen levels by developing unique physiological features.
Chandra Taal is one of India’s two high-altitude wetlands, designated Ramsar sites, highlighting its ecological significance. However, increased tourism impacts this pristine paradise, necessitating efforts to preserve its natural beauty.
Chandra Taal offers a serene and enchanting experience for nature enthusiasts. It promises breathtaking landscapes and a glimpse into the unique high-altitude ecosystem of the Himalayas.
