Chapman Lake, consisting of Big Chapman and Little Chapman, is one of North Indiana’s best-kept secrets. Located three miles northeast of Warsaw, these natural lakes have been favored for residential living and recreational activities for over 70 years. Formed by glacial action, these lakes are part of the Wabash River drainage and are known for their clear waters and scenic beauty.
Big Chapman Lake covers 413 surface acres, surrounded by cottages and year-round homes. Its clear waters are ideal for boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, and pontooning. Connected by a natural channel, Little Chapman Lake spans 200 acres and has more aquatic vegetation, making it a haven for wildlife and birdwatching. The western shoreline of Little Chapman Lake primarily consists of wetlands, which support a diverse ecosystem.
A public boat ramp on the southeast shore of Big Chapman Lake, managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), provides easy access for larger boats. Fishing is a popular activity in both lakes, with species such as bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, northern pike, yellow perch, and various types of sunfish being common catches. Ice fishing is also a favorite winter pastime.
The Chapman Lake Nature Preserve, encompassing over 250 acres of wetlands along the lakes’ western shores, is home to several endangered species and species of special concern. The Chapman Lakes Conservation Association and the Chapman Lakes Foundation are vital in monitoring water quality, protecting critical habitats, and fostering community through various activities and events.
The area around Chapman Lakes offers a variety of recreational opportunities. The lakes are ideal for both power boating and paddling. Nearby Warsaw provides additional attractions, including the Old Jail Museum of the Kosciusko Historical Society and several good hotels and restaurants. The surrounding region, known for its Amish heritage, offers scenic drives, craft markets, botanical gardens, and cultural events at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend.
