The Clermont Chain of Lakes in East Central Florida offers a stunning water paradise with over 9,000 acres of water surface, supplemented by miles of canals and rivers. Eleven of the thirteen lakes in the chain are interconnected by channels and navigable stretches of the Palatlakaha River. Although a water control facility on the Palatlakaha River separates the remaining two lakes from through-boat traffic, they are nevertheless connected. The Clermont Chain of Lakes, a popular location for water sports enthusiasts and home to one of the area’s hottest housing markets is located a few miles southwest of Orlando.
Waterskiing and other water sports are best enjoyed on the chain’s major lakes, Lake Minneola (1,888 acres), Lake Minnehaha (2,298 acres), Lake Louisa (3,634 acres), and Cherry Lake (401 acres). These lakes, along with the smaller Lake Winona, Lake Palatlakaha, Lake Hiawatha, Wilson Lake, Lake Susan, Lake Crescent, and Cook Lake, offer various water experiences, from serene paddling to bustling boating. The lakes are renowned for their scenic beauty, featuring moss-draped cypress trees and diverse wildlife.
Fishing is a major attraction, with species such as smallmouth bass, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish commonly caught. The lakes have numerous fish attractants, such as fallen trees and dredge holes marked by buoys. Fishing piers and ADA-compliant facilities provide access for all visitors, and a Florida fishing license is required.
Boating enthusiasts can use the two marinas on Lake Minnehaha and Lake Susan, offering boat rentals and gas sales. Public boat ramps are available throughout the chain, and a swimming beach is at Lake Louisa State Park. Paddling enthusiasts can enjoy almost 26 miles of paddling on the Lake County Blueway system’s longest water route, Palatlakaha Run.
The City of Clermont, known as the “wakeboarding capital of the world,” hosts a year-round wakeboarding camp and offers a variety of recreational facilities, including a boat ramp, public beach, and rental services for bicycles and kayaks. Many trail alternatives are available via the South Lake Trail, which is well-liked by walkers and rollerbladers. It connects to the West Orange Trail. The Great Clermont Triathlon, held annually, takes advantage of the area’s water and trails.
Lake Louisa State Park offers full-service campsites, primitive camping areas, equestrian camping sites, and a boat ramp. The park also features picnic grounds and non-motorized fishing boat access to four other lakes. Despite challenges from extended drought and population growth, efforts are underway to address algae growth and nutrient-heavy storm runoff.
