Welcome to Cranberry Lake

Cranberry Lake, nestled on the east branch of the Oswegatchie River in New York’s Adirondack Park, is a natural wonder. It’s the third largest lake in the region, surpassed only by Lake George and the Great Sacandaga Lake. Approximately 75 percent of its shoreline is state-owned, hugging the 118,000-acre Five Ponds Wilderness Area to the south and the Cranberry Lake Wild Forest to the north, a testament to its unspoiled beauty.
The lake spans parts of the Town of Clifton, the Town of Piercefield, and the Town of Fine, entirely within Saint Lawrence County. The community of Cranberry Lake sits on the north arm, while Wanakena, home to the SUNY-ESF Ranger School, is located on the western arm. Several islands dot the lake, including Joe Indian Island and Buck Island, and the Cranberry Lake Biological Station of SUNY-ESF is situated on Barber Point.
The northern peninsula features Bear Mountain, with state camping facilities, and the Bear Mountain Trail, which offers a rigorous hike to a lookout spot with scenic views. The Cranberry Lake 50 is a popular 50-mile loop trail for backpackers traversing Cranberry Lake and Wanakena.
Historically, a dam in 1865 doubled the lake’s surface area. The Rich Brothers Lumber Company later constructed a lumber mill on its southwestern shore, significantly contributing to the area’s logging industry. Railroads built in the early 1900s connected the lake to larger transportation networks, facilitating tourism and logging.
With so many recreational options, Cranberry Lake is becoming a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. From fishing for smallmouth bass, northern pike, brook trout, and brown trout, to boating and hiking, there’s something for everyone. The lake’s historical significance and natural beauty continue to draw visitors and nature enthusiasts, promising an exciting and fulfilling experience.
