Welcome to Florence Lake

Florence Lake, tucked away on the serene Anderson Island, holds a special place in the hearts of Seattle and Puget Sound locals. This eight square-mile island, only accessible by ferry from Steilacoom, has a rich history dating back to before its ‘official’ discovery in 1841. Once farmland, a retirement escape, and now a bustling residential neighborhood, Anderson Island beckons with its unique charm.
In this island paradise, Florence Lake shimmers as the public gem, while Josephine Lake offers a more private sanctuary. Connected by a quaint channel, water gracefully flows between the two during times of high water. Florence Lake, spanning approximately 64.9 acres, is a haven for activities like water skiing and tubing, while Josephine Lake remains a peaceful no-motors zone.
A lovely mix of residential homes dot the southern shores of Florence Lake, with fewer perched along the north. The quaint Lowell Johnson Park, fondly known as ‘The Old Swimming Hole’, boasts the island’s lone freshwater beach. Visitors can unwind at the picnic area, complete with restrooms and a sand volleyball court. Boating is kept slow and safe in designated ‘no-wake’ zones.
Despite its modest size, Florence Lake teems with life. Largemouth bass and bluegill thrive in its waters, while the state diligently stocks rainbow and brown trout each year. Efforts are underway to develop a designated boat launch for easier access to the lake.
The wholesome island life extends beyond the shores of Florence Lake. Anderson Island, self-governing in many aspects, offers a range of amenities from volunteer fire services to a vibrant park system. With its abundant wildlife and well-maintained trail network, the island beckons the adventurous spirit.
Visitors can savor the tranquility of Florence Lake from nearby lodgings, some owned by members of the Riviera Community Club. While the island boasts its own school and community activities, the neighboring towns of Steilacoom and Tacoma offer additional attractions, just a ferry ride away.
Whether seeking outdoor adventures in the nearby national parks or indulging in a bit of island solitude, Anderson Island promises a memorable escape
