Welcome to Hubbard Lake

Hubbard Lake, located in Alcona County in Northern Michigan, is a vast freshwater lake covering 8,850 acres (36 km²). Stretching seven miles (11 km) in length and two miles (3 km) in width, Hubbard Lake boasts a maximum depth of 85 feet (26 m) and an average depth of 32.6 feet (9.9 m). This scenic lake spans three townships: Caledonia, Alcona, and Hawes.
The lake’s history is rich, originating from the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw, where the Ojibwa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi tribes ceded over six million acres of land, including Hubbard Lake, to the United States. Initially known as the “Bottomless Lake,” it was later renamed “Hubbard Lake” in 1867 in honor of Dr. Bela Hubbard, a prominent Michigan geologist.
Five streams feed Hubbard Lake, which has a concrete dam at its north that supplies power to the Alpena Power Company. This dam, initially constructed to increase the lake’s depth for use during the lumber boom, continues to play a crucial role in maintaining the lake’s water levels.
Hubbard Lake is a popular destination for both summer and winter activities. The lake is well-stocked with bass, yellow perch, northern pike, trout, and walleye, making it a favorite spot for anglers. Fishing is a year-round activity here, with many residents and visitors enjoying summer angling and winter ice fishing. The lake’s clear waters and abundant fish populations make it an ideal spot for various fishing techniques, including trolling, fly fishing, and ice fishing.
The surrounding area of Hubbard Lake is densely populated with cottage homes, offering a perfect getaway for those looking to enjoy the serene beauty of Northern Michigan. The lake’s shores provide excellent opportunities for boating, swimming, and other water-based recreational activities.
While Hubbard Lake does not have formal campgrounds, numerous vacation homes and cottages are available for rent. These accommodations offer various amenities to ensure a comfortable stay for visitors.
Hubbard Lake’s combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities makes it a treasured destination for locals and visitors looking to experience the best of Northern Michigan.
