Lake Carnegie, also known as Carnegie Lake, is a gift from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. Located on Princeton University’s southern end, it was constructed to provide a practice lake for the Princeton rowing team. The lake, formed by damming the Millstone River at the confluence of Stony Brook, has been a cherished spot since 1906.
The lake spans three miles and is perfect for competitive rowing, sailing, and fishing. The picturesque Princeton Boat House and luxury homes dot the western shoreline. Of particular interest is the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association, an exclusive membership-only club that offers sculling lessons and hosts annual rowing events, including the prestigious Carnegie Lake Regatta. The lake, part of the Lake Carnegie Historic District, has also been a venue for Olympic rowing trials.
Open to the public, Lake Carnegie prohibits private gasoline-powered boats and swimming but welcomes fishing, boating, and scenic enjoyment. The lake is bordered by the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, a picturesque setting that offers a 68-mile towpath for walking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and wheelchair access. With its serene waters and lush greenery, the lake is only 800 feet across at its widest point, making it ideal for bank fishing along the towpath.
Several authorized boat launch sites provide access to the lake, with some offering picnic facilities and restrooms. Canoe and kayak rentals are available at Princeton Turning Basin Park. Fishers can hope to catch a variety of species, including largemouth bass, channel catfish, black crappie, yellow perch, chain pickerel, sunfish, northern pike, carp, and occasionally rainbow or brown trout from Stony Brook. It is necessary to have a fishing license in New Jersey.
Community groups have worked tirelessly to clean the lake and monitor water quality. The lake has been dredged three times to maintain a depth of nine feet. Despite a mercury hazard warning for fish consumption, the lake is cleaner and more navigable than in past years, thanks to these dedicated efforts.
For those who enjoy history, Lake Carnegie is a terrific location. The location of the Battle of Princeton is the Princeton Battlefield State Park, which is situated just south of the lake. The park has trails, self-guided tours, and the Clarke House Museum. The location of Washington’s forces’ 1776 Christmas Eve crossing of the Delaware is marked at the nearby Washington Crossing State Park. In addition to plenty of animals, the park has walking routes and cross-country skiing in the winter. The Visitor’s Center hosts exhibits on Washington’s military campaign.
Princeton and Trenton offer museums, performing arts venues, and Revolutionary War sites. Trenton, New Jersey’s capital, has exciting nightlife and dining options. Princeton University’s scenic campus hosts several performing arts venues. Lodging options include major hotels, bed & breakfasts, inns, and guest houses.
