Welcome to Lake Manyara

Rediscover the wonder of your youth by indulging in luxury at a treetop sanctuary overlooking the unique and picturesque Lake Manyara in Tanzania. This enchanting body of water, nestled amidst a breathtaking landscape, served as the muse for Ernest Hemingway, inspiring him to pen his masterpiece, “Green Hills of Africa,” following his memorable vacation there in 1933. Dating back approximately three million years, Lake Manyara is a serene alkaline lake in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, boasting an average depth of 10 feet. Despite being fed by several rivers and streams from the surrounding Ngorongoro Highlands, the lake has yet to see an outflow. Its water levels are subject to dramatic fluctuations throughout the seasons. The region experiences two distinct rainy seasons – the “short rains” from November to December and the “long rains” from March to May. During these periods, the lake’s waters stretch over approximately 89 square miles or 56,960 acres.
Conversely, in the dry spells from June to September and January to February, the scorching African sun causes the water to evaporate rapidly due to its proximity to the equator. As the water evaporates, it leaves a concentration of salt and other minerals, resulting in brackish water. During the dry spells, the lake undergoes a stunning transformation, showcasing exposed lands dotted with lush grasses that beckon grazing wildlife and a silvery sheen from the salt deposits. In times of severe drought, the lake’s depths may dwindle to knee-deep, disrupting and halting sightseeing canoe trips until the waters surge again. Despite the lake’s dramatic water level changes, it is home to a diverse fish population, notably catfish and tilapia. The term “Manyara” originates from the Maasai language, denoting a type of plant that grows into dense hedges. The Maasai community employs this resilient plant as a natural barrier for their livestock. Manyara’s robust nature enables it to withstand the harsh climate conditions and livestock activities within the enclosures.
Interestingly, the name references the prevalence of this plant species in the Lake Manyara vicinity rather than the lake itself. Lake Manyara forms the core of the Lake Manyara National Park, spanning two-thirds of its expanse. The park’s varied terrain encompasses steep mountainsides, marshy swamplands, dense forests, and open grasslands, providing a conducive environment for a rich tapestry of wildlife and flora. Originally established as a World Biosphere Reserve to shield dwindling elephant herds from poachers, the park is now a sanctuary for many elephants. Renowned for its tree-climbing lions lazing amidst acacia tree branches, the park astonishes visitors with its compelling biodiversity. A leisurely jeep ride through the park can acquaint visitors with its wonders within about two hours. Yet, slowing down and immersing oneself in the park’s offerings is necessary. The park’s wildlife is habituated to human presence and noises, allowing for unhurried observations and optimal photo opportunities of these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Besides lions and elephants, the park teems with leopards, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, hippos, hyenas, wildebeests, baboons, and blue monkeys congregating at the lake’s shores to quench their thirst, undeterred by its saline content. Lake Manyara’s unique freshwater-saltwater cycles attract many bird species for an avian enthusiast’s delight. Over 400 bird species, including seven vulture species, twelve eagle species, five owl species, flamingos, pelicans, storks, waterfowl, and migratory birds, call the park home.
While residing in this paradise, accommodations offer a blend of proximity to nature and the thrill of African safaris. The unique experience of staying in a treehouse suite, nestled among towering mahogany trees, equipped with modern amenities, and a stunning vista of Lake Manyara’s lively happenings within half a mile of its shores, is a luxury traveler’s dream. Surrounding the lake and park, local guesthouses, safari camps, and lodges cater to a wide spectrum of budgets, offering a range of amenities from basic to luxurious. Experienced outfitters and guides in the area ensure an unforgettable and secure Tanzanian experience, showcasing their unique talents to enhance your holiday memories. Lake Manyara National Park proudly presents extensive game-viewing opportunities, encapsulating a complete Tanzanian safari adventure within its compact boundaries. Including Lake Manyara in your itinerary promises a thrilling encounter with diverse wildlife in a short period. Ernest Hemingway once professed that Lake Manyara and its environs were “the loveliest I had seen in Africa.” What will your Lake Manyara and Tanzanian expedition evoke in you upon your return home?
