Lake Singkarak, known as Danau Singkarak in Indonesian, is a stunning lake in West Sumatra, Indonesia, nestled between the regencies of Tanah Datar and Solok. This crescent-shaped lake covers an area of 107.8 km² and is approximately 21 km in length and 7 km in width. It is one of the region’s most beautiful natural features, formed around 200,000 years ago during the Quaternary period due to glacial activity.
The lake’s main outflow is the Ombilin River, which empties into the Strait of Malacca in the east. Nevertheless, the Anai River, which empties into the Indian Ocean to the west of Padang, now receives most of the lake’s discharge. This river runs the Singkarak hydroelectric facility, which serves the provinces of Riau and West Sumatra.
Lake Singkarak is a center of activity and a sight to behold. It is well-known for its local delicacy, ikan bilih (Mystacoleucus padangensis), an endemic fish species. Along the lake’s edge, there are cafes, tiny motels, and traditional Minangkabau craft stores. Swimming, fishing, and boat trips are just a few activities available to visitors. There are also popular locations for renting boats. The lake is home to at least 19 fish species, with Esau being a favorite among anglers.

Boat tours and personal boat rentals are popular ways to explore the lake, and the town of Umbilin offers organized tours.
Lake Singkarak has also gained international attention through the annual “Tour de Singkarak” bicycle race, which begins in Padang, circles the lake, and traverses several West Sumatra cities. This event has boosted cycling and hiking around the lake, encouraging more tourism.
Access to Lake Singkarak is relatively easy. Travelers can take the train or local buses, though most prefer renting a car. The lake is about 45 miles east of the coastal resort city of Padang, known for its excellent diving waters, deep-sea fishing, and water sports. Padang also offers surfing tours, ferries to nearby islands, and a bustling Chinatown.
The nearby city of Bukittinggi, 22 miles north of Lake Singkarak, is a cultural hub featuring unique Minangkabau architecture, Dutch Colonial buildings, and historical sites like the 1926 Clock Tower and Fort de Kock. The area also offers museums, Japanese caves from WWII, and performances of native songs and dance at the Culture Center, providing a rich cultural experience for visitors.
