Welcome to Lakes of Custer State Park

Nestled in South Dakota’s Black Hills, Badlands, and Lakes Region, Custer State Park has five picturesque lakes: Bismarck Lake, Legion Lake, Stockade Lake, Center Lake, and Sylvan Lake. Each of these lakes offers unique beauty and charm. The others, including Bismarck Lake, which is situated immediately outside the park in the Black Hills National Forest, are smaller and more tranquil. Still, Stockade Lake, at 120 acres, is the biggest.
Custer State Park is rich in history and natural beauty. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed many of the park’s buildings, bridges, campgrounds, and dams during the Great Depression, including those creating Stockade, Center, and Legion Lakes. The dam for Sylvan Lake dates back to 1881. Visitors can enjoy various outdoor activities, from fishing and boating to hiking and wildlife watching. The park’s 71,000 acres are home to numerous trails, scenic drives, and diverse wildlife, including bison, elk, pronghorn, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and wild burros.
Recreational Activities
Fishing: The lakes are stocked with brown trout, rainbow trout, and other species, providing excellent fishing opportunities.
Boating: Most lakes are ‘no wake’ lakes, with several allowing only electric motors. Paddleboats, canoes, and kayaks can be rented at the lakes.
Swimming: Sylvan Lake and Legion Lake offer swimming beaches.
Hiking: Numerous trails, such as the Sylvan Lake Shore Trail and the Legion Lake Trail, offer scenic views and wildlife observation.
Historical Sites
Legion Lake Lodge: Established in 1913, the lodge offers dining, cabins, and watercraft rentals.
Sylvan Lake Lodge: Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, this lodge offers modern accommodations and beautiful lake views.
Gordon Stockade: A replica of the fence built by the first illegal gold seekers in the Black Hills.
