For those looking for peace and quiet and outdoor experiences, the numerous lakes in the Pigeon Lake Wilderness provide a tranquil haven. Situated in Hamilton and Herkimer counties, in the heart of Adirondack Park, this 50,000-acre roadless Wilderness is home to at least 64 water sources. Despite its attractiveness, the area is still uncrowded because it doesn’t get much attention from Adirondack Park publications.
Situated near the more famous Big Moose Lake, Pigeon Lake Wilderness features over 45 miles of hiking trails. These trails intersect in various configurations, creating loop options of different difficulties. The trails are often wet but generally lack significant elevation changes. Chub Lake, Pigeon Lake, Upper and Lower Sister Lakes, Mays Pond, Gull Lake, Russian Lake, Constable Lake, Merriam Lake, Cascade Lake, Windfall Lake, Queer Lake, and Shallow Lake are some of the notable lakes in the Wilderness that have designated routes. There are six lean-to camping shelters along these lakes, but most are only reachable by boat. Streams to the lakes may be impassable due to fallen trees and swampy margins, requiring some bushwhacking for hikers.
While no official statistics exist for these lakes, maps and trail guides can be obtained from the Adirondack Mountain Club or local ranger stations. National Geographic also offers a comprehensive book of Adirondack Trail Maps.
Among the popular hiking routes, the Cascade Lake Loop stands out. This six-mile trail includes footbridges, boardwalks, and a 40-foot waterfall at Cascade Lake’s end. Another accessible lean-to is located on Queer Lake’s shore, reached via a trail off County Highway 1 or a side spur from the Cascade Lake trail.
Fishing is popular in the wilderness brooks, and trout is a common catch. Precautions are advised since bear sightings are probable. The woodland environment serves as a home for various wildlife, such as woodpeckers and songbirds. To keep the Wilderness in immaculate condition, motorized vehicles are not permitted within its boundaries.
Although the Pigeon Lake Wilderness is best enjoyed on day trips or weekend excursions, neighboring vacation spots offer more developed amenities. Watersports, guest rentals, and entertainment are popular attractions at the Fulton Chain of Lakes, Raquette Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Sacandaga Lake, and Indian Lake. Each has distinctive activities like mountain climbing, spelunking, boat rentals, and historic tours.
