Meduxnekeag Lake, or Drew’s Lake, offers a serene Northern Maine hideaway in Aroostook County. Meduxnekeag Lake is a paradise for anglers, offering a diverse range of species such as American eel, pumpkinseed sunfish, yellow perch, chain pickerel, white perch, rainbow smelt, splake, redbreast sunfish, lake chub, landlocked salmon, brook trout, and brown trout. Fly fishing is particularly popular in the incoming streams and shallow, rocky shoals. Ice fishing is also permitted, with state regulations governing times and creel limits. The lake flows east into the St. Johns River near the Canadian border, an area traditionally utilized by the Maliseet Native American tribe for hunting and fishing. The tribe, headquartered in Houlton, also creates and sells beautiful baskets made from local materials. The Drew’s Lake Property Owners Association, a small but cohesive community, plays a crucial role in maintaining the lake’s health and monitoring water quality. They purchased and rebuilt the dam a few years ago, ensuring the continued beauty and functionality of the lake.
While there are no marinas or fuel stations along the shore, motorized boats are allowed. Canoes and kayaks are perfect for exploring the calm waters and seeing animals like moose, bald eagles, and different ducks. Real estate opportunities are available around the lake, including existing homes and building lots. Nearby small motels and guest rentals provide additional lodging options.
The nearby villages of Linneus and New Limerick offer essential services and dining options, with Houlton, the larger town, located almost 10 miles to the east. Houlton, known as the ‘end of I-95’, is a hub of activity with preserved historic homes, the Aroostook Historical & Art Museum, and the Hancock Barracks.
