Welcome to Powers Lake

Powers Lake is a census-designated place (CDP) in Randall and Wheatland in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 1,401. Originally part of Walworth County, a portion of Powers Lake became part of the village of Bloomfield on December 20, 2011. The area has a rich history, initially known as Lakeville and then Nippersink before being named after early settler James B. Powers, a postmaster, and a valued community member. The fertile soil and access to water made it a prime farming community. By the 1880s, the lakes attracted recreational interest, particularly from Chicago, leading to the development of the North Shore of Powers Lake in the 1890s. Ice companies also established a significant presence, with five ice houses on Powers Lake.

Geographically, Powers Lake is situated at coordinates 42°32’20” North and 88°17’53” West, covering a total area of 3.1 square miles, of which 2.2 square miles is land and 0.9 square miles is water, making water account for 27.88% of the total area.

The population of Powers Lake has varied over the years, with a peak of 1,615 in 2010 before declining to 1,401 in 2020. According to the census, the CDP had 1,500 residents in 2000, with a population density of 783.6 persons per square mile. The racial makeup was predominantly White at 97.53%, with small percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races. Hispanic or Latino individuals comprised 2.13% of the population. Households averaged 2.73 people, with a family size of 3.15. The per capita income of the neighborhood was $22,766, and the median household income was $53,403. Approximately 7.4% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older.

Powers Lake remains a community with historical charm and a mix of residential and recreational appeal, reflecting its roots as both a farming hub and a leisure destination.
