33,000 acres make up the massive and essential Ross Barnett Reservoir, also referred to as the Rez, in central Mississippi. The reservoir, which supplies drinking water to Jackson, the state capital, is tucked away between the counties of Madison and Rankin. Constructed between 1960 and 1963 by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, the reservoir was created to manage water supply and flood control, ultimately transforming the landscape and offering substantial recreational opportunities.
The reservoir’s 105 miles of shoreline are bordered on the west by the historic Natchez Trace Parkway and on the south by a 3.5-mile artificial dam and spillway. This extensive shoreline provides ample space for a variety of outdoor activities. The reservoir’s depth reaches up to 11 feet on average, making it suitable for numerous water-based activities. Visitors enjoy boating, fishing, water-skiing, and camping, with the lake’s chilly waters providing a refreshing escape during hot summers.
Fishing enthusiasts are drawn to the Ross Barnett Reservoir for its diverse fish population, which includes bass, crappie, paddlefish, and catfish. The reservoir is renowned for holding state records for smallmouth buffalo and bowfin. With 22 boat launches to facilitate recreational fishing, the reservoir offers easy access for anglers and boaters, promising an exciting and rewarding experience.
The surrounding area boasts five campgrounds and 16 parks, offering picnic areas, playgrounds, and hiking trails. These include a specialized mountain bike path, two multipurpose trails, and three trails that are wheelchair accessible. All of them offer beautiful scenery and exciting outdoor experiences.
The reservoir, which is overseen by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, stimulates local commercial and residential growth in addition to providing needed water. Over 4,600 residences are located in the reservoir area, reflecting its importance as a community hub.
Despite its recreational allure, the Ross Barnett Reservoir has encountered environmental hurdles, such as eutrophication and pollution from agricultural runoff.
