The Seven Rila Lakes, Bulgaria’s most visited lakes, are a breathtaking glacial series located in the Rila Mountains within Rila National Park, about two hours from Sofia. Nearby, the Rila Monastery, a significant symbol of Bulgarian national identity, is a must-visit. Originally built around 950 AD and reconstructed over the centuries, it features impressive architecture and historical relics. Bus tours from Sofia regularly visit the monastery.
Rila National Park, Bulgaria’s largest, spans 200,269 acres and includes many high peaks and over 200 glacial lakes. The park offers a variety of marked and unmarked trails, making it a hiker’s paradise. Guided tours are available, and the park is becoming increasingly popular with European tourists.
Sofia, located two hours north of the lakes, offers rich historical sightseeing. The city boasts numerous historic churches, palaces, museums, and vibrant cultural life.
