Welcome to Sparkling Lake

Sparkling Lake, nestled within the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest in Vilas County, Wisconsin, is a serene and ecologically significant seepage lake. Covering 64 hectares, this lake is characterized by its clear waters, sandy and gravelly substrates, and a moderately developed 4.3-kilometer shoreline. With a maximum depth of 20 meters, Sparkling Lake is a well-liked location for boating, swimming, fishing, and other outdoor activities since it provides a rich and varied aquatic habitat.
Sparkling Lake’s natural beauty and biodiversity have been preserved thanks to a number of effective ecological management projects carried out there over the years. From 2001 to 2008, concerted efforts were made to remove the invasive Rusty Crayfish (Orconectes rusticus). Published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, this effort used fish predation and trapping techniques to help control an invasive species and preserve the biological balance of the lake.
Following this, between 2002 and 2009, another comprehensive project targeted the removal of Rainbow Smelt (Actinoperygii, Osmeridae), an invasive fish species that threatened native aquatic life. The approach combined overharvesting with food web manipulation to reduce the smelt population and restore the lake’s natural food chain dynamics, as documented in Hydrobiologia.
In 2020, Cisco (Coregonus artedi) was introduced to enhance Sparkling Lake’s ecological diversity further. This native fish species plays a crucial role in the lake’s food web, supporting a variety of predator species and contributing to the overall health of the aquatic ecosystem. The introduction of Cisco is part of an ongoing strategy to bolster the lake’s biodiversity and resilience.
At an elevation of 495 meters, Sparkling Lake is a focal point for ecological research and a beloved recreational spot. Its pristine waters and surrounding natural beauty provide a great backdrop for outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The lake’s management practices ensure a sustainable and enjoyable environment for wildlife and visitors.
Situated in a region famous for its natural beauty, Sparkling Lake continues to be a testament to successful conservation efforts. It serves as a vital habitat for a variety of species and offers a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts and researchers alike. The ongoing efforts to monitor and manage the lake’s ecosystem highlight the importance of collaborative conservation projects. Your support and involvement are crucial in preserving such valuable natural resources for future generations.
