Welcome to Spruce Knob Lake

Spruce Knob Lake is located in the picturesque Monongahela National Forest in the eastern part of West Virginia. Nestled less than a mile from the lake itself, Spruce Knob Lake Campground offers a serene escape amidst a hardwood forest. Spruce Knob, standing at 4,863 feet, is the highest peak in West Virginia and features a stone and steel observation tower at its summit. This tower provides visitors with breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding mountainous landscape.
The campground is perched on a wooded ridge that overlooks the lake, offering a tranquil setting for nature lovers. The vegetation on Spruce Knob is unique, with one-sided red spruce trees that have adapted to the harsh, exposed environment characterized by strong westerly winds. The ground is covered with blueberry and huckleberry plants, adding to the area’s natural beauty.
Due to its elevation, the campground can experience cold fogs and strong winds throughout the year, creating a dynamic and ever-changing environment for visitors.
Spruce Knob Lake itself is a 25-acre body of water that is popular for trout fishing. The lake has a small boat ramp, parking area, vault toilets, and a wooden pier that provides barrier-free access to the water. While swimming is not permitted, the lake is a favored spot for boating and fishing.
The surrounding region is crisscrossed by 60 miles of picturesque hiking trails, including the pleasant 1-mile Big Bend River Loop that can be accessed directly from the campground. Another notable trail is the half-mile Whispering Spruce Trail, which circles Spruce Knob and offers panoramic views of the area.
