Nestled in New Hampshire’s Monadnock region, Swanzey Lake is a cherished gem for those fortunate to live along its shoreline. Formed from a natural, spring-fed pool in the late 1700s by damming the outlet of Swanzey Pond, the lake’s waters have powered various small mills over the years, contributing to the growth of the Town of Swanzey. Located less than 10 miles south of Keene, the lake feeds into the Ashuelot River through numerous brooks and seasonal springs. The lake remains entirely private except for a small park and swimming beach open only to residents.
Settled early in America’s history, the Monadnock region attracted small farmers and industrialists. Historical records indicate that the first dam across Swanzey Pond was built in 1780 to manufacture pickles, followed by a succession of mills producing goods for local markets. Swanzey Lake quickly became a desirable residential area, hosting several children’s camps by the early 20th century, one of which still operates today. Two campgrounds are a Christian-centered camp for youth, families, and group retreats and a commercial campground with modern amenities and planned activities.
Richardson Park, exclusive to Swanzey residents, offers a sandy beach with a buoyed swim area, a fishing pier, and a car-top canoe and kayak launch. The 2.5-mile road encircling the lake provides a scenic, shaded walk, especially attractive in the fall. While jet skis are banned, other boating activities, such as canoeing and kayaking, are popular. Fishing is a favorite pastime, with species like smallmouth bass, bluegill, and trout inhabiting the lake. Although the availability of ice fishing is still being determined, the area is popular in winter for skiing and other cold-weather activities.
Swanzey Lake is surrounded by history, with seven of New Hampshire’s prettiest covered bridges nearby. These include the Slate Covered Bridge, Carlton Covered Bridge, and Cresson Covered Bridge, among others. The Ashuelot Rail Trail offers hiking and other outdoor activities, providing natural vistas along an old railroad right-of-way. The nearby college town of Keene hosts various cultural and recreational events, including marathons, theater productions, and youth-oriented activities.
