Waiakea Pond, spanning 25 acres, is the largest natural lake on Hawaii’s Big Island in the heart of Hilo. This pond is part of the Wailoa River State Recreation Area and is connected to the Wailoa Stream, which flows from the lower reaches of the Mauna Loa volcano towards the ocean at Hilo Bay. Historically, Waiakea Pond, previously known as Trout Lake and Lake Beautiful, has been a central feature in the Hilo area.
