Welcome to Winter Haven Chain of Lakes

Nestled within the heart of Florida’s West Central region lies the enchanting Winter Haven Chain of Lakes. Since immemorial, these pristine, spring-fed lakes have been cherished by locals and travelers alike. Before the bustling coastal beaches drew in crowds of tourists seeking the salty kiss of the sea breeze, this captivating region beckoned a different kind of visitor—a leisurely kind drawn to the allure of fishing, golfing, and partaking in water sports under the sun, activities often out of reach in the frigid climes of the north. Polk County boasts many freshwater lakes, with over 500 scattered throughout its vast expanse. What sets these lakes apart is their interconnectedness through a network of artificial canals, allowing seamless boating across the entire chain. The quaint city of Winter Haven is embraced by two interlinked chains of lakes, enveloping its downtown core in a watery embrace. The Winter Haven Chain is home to approximately 23 splendid lakes, though reports vary, with some claiming 16 while others suggest even 25 lakes. Lake Blue and Lake Marianna occasionally unite during heightened water levels. These lakes, characterized by their shallow depths and fringed by expansive wetlands, are teeming with lakeside abodes and vacation hideaways. The genesis of the connecting channels dates back to 1915, with extensive work undertaken during the Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Originally lined with wooden pilings to safeguard against soil erosion, sturdy steel and aluminum seawalls have replaced many of these. The Southern Chain, comprising around 16 lakes, and the Northern Chain, featuring a potential nine lakes, were historically distinct entities until recent years when a lock was installed to bridge the two chains. The Southern Chain boasts illustrious bodies of water such as Lake Eloise, Lake Cannon, Lake Hartridge, Lake Howard, Lake Idylwild, Lake Jessie, Lake Lulu, Lake Mary, Lake Mirror, Lake Roy, Lake Shipp, Lake Spring, Lake Summit, and Lake Winterset. Notable in their own right, Little Lake Eloise and Little Lake Winterset, often recognized as bays of their larger counterparts, are occasionally counted as separate lakes. Meanwhile, the Northern Chain encompasses Lake Conine, Lake Rochelle, Lake Haines, Lake Smart, Lake Fannie, Lake Hamilton, Middle Lake Hamilton, Little Lake Hamilton, and Lake Henry, interconnected through a complex web of water bodies. A pair of manual boat lifts ease navigation between Lake Smart, Lake Fannie, and Lake Hamilton, enhancing the seamless flow of watercraft within the system. Additionally, a new lock links Lake Hartridge in the Southern Chain to Lake Conine in the Northern Chain. The maritime realm is punctuated by many public boat launch sites, enabling convenient access to the waterways. While the vast Lake Eloise lacks a public launch point, its counterpart, Lake Summit, offers a gateway to aquatic adventure. Arguably the lake that propelled Winter Haven into the limelight, Lake Eloise played host to the renowned Cypress Gardens, a magnet for legions of visitors flocking to witness water skiing spectacles, delight in amusement park attractions, and revel in the lush surroundings. Water skiing is a prime draw of the Winter Haven Chain, complemented by jet skiing, power boating, pontoon excursions, and sailing. Various water ski schools cater to enthusiasts, offering lessons in traditional and barefoot skiing techniques. Fishing also ranks high on the list of preferred pastimes, with the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes harboring healthy largemouth bass, bluegill, and black crappie populations. Regular fishing tournaments are held on these waters, with artificial fish habitats enhancing the ecosystem’s viability. The verdant wetlands serve as breeding grounds for various species, enriching the region’s biodiversity. Beyond the confines of the chain, an additional 30 lakes, largely petite in size, sit within proximity, albeit lacking direct connections. Several of these neighboring lakes feature public boat launches, while a handful of marinas cater to boaters, offering essential supplies and sustenance for the aquatic sojourners. In the face of intermittent drought plaguing Florida in recent years, some canals have succumbed to low water levels, impeding navigation for larger vessels. Remedial measures aim to deepen the channels by two feet to avert future challenges. This endeavor poses a sizable undertaking, requiring the reinforcement or replacement of aging seawalls at risk of erosion. Undaunted by these obstacles, Winter Haven Chain residents remain resolute in restoring the canals to their former glory. The rejuvenation efforts promise a resurgence of flourishing water passages, reinvigorating the lively interplay between the lakes and rejuvenating the essence of life at the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes. Embracing a tourism-forward ethos, Winter Haven stands as a welcoming hub for travelers, bolstered by an array of campgrounds and RV parks dotting the lakeside vistas alongside a bustling array of shops, dining establishments, and entertainment venues in the downtown precinct. The locale hosts numerous golf courses, parks, and a nature preserve catering to outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The advent of Legoland, a family-centric amusement park succeeding the hallowed grounds of Cypress Gardens, adds a new dimension to the landscape, catering to young visitors under 12. Nearby Haines City boasts the picturesque Bok Tower Gardens, while the renowned attractions surrounding Walt Disney’s iconic legacy lie 40 miles away. Access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico lies within a short hour-and-a-half drive, while the fascinating ecological enclaves of the Lake Wales Ridge beckon from the confines of nearby state parks and conservation lands. Contrasting with the frenetic beach scenes on the coastlines, Winter Haven offers a serene respite, ideal for a leisurely vacation or a sought-after permanent abode. A range of accommodations awaits, with hotels, motels, resorts, private rentals, and charming bed-and-breakfasts situated within convenient reach. Lakeside properties and canalside abodes frequently grace the market, often bundled with watercraft as part of the package, ensuring an immersive experience of waterborne living. With miles of shoreline hosting an array of homes, the prospects of lakefront living remain ever enticing.
