Welcome to Great Falls Lake & Rocky Creek Lake

Nestled between Fishing Creek Reservoir and Lake Wateree in South Carolina’s Olde English District, Great Falls Lake and Rocky Creek Lake offer some of the region’s most spectacular paddling and fishing opportunities. These two bodies of water, part of the same Catawba River system, are separated by an island created by an artificial channel used for hydroelectric generation. Great Falls Lake is the upstream reservoir, while Rocky Creek Lake retains the original channel of the Catawba River.
Great Falls Lake, impounded by the small Coffey Dam, covers 477 acres and lacks public boat access, requiring boaters to travel downstream from Fishing Creek Reservoir. The water from Great Falls Lake flows to the Dearborn-Great Falls Powerhouse and Dam before continuing downstream to become Rocky Creek Lake. This lake, known locally as Stumpy Pond due to its many submerged stumps, spans 847 acres and is surrounded by a largely undeveloped, scenic shoreline.
The eastern shore of Rocky Creek Lake is managed as a wildlife area, providing habitat for various species of wildlife and waterfowl. The islands and shoreline offer excellent kayaking, canoeing, and fishing opportunities. The lake is known for its abundant crappie, bass, and catfish, drawing anglers who often need a fish finder to navigate the complex underwater terrain.
Public access to these lakes is limited but includes three boat launch sites with parking provided by Duke Energy. While no designated swimming areas or extensive recreational facilities exist, the lakes’ natural beauty and tranquility make them a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts. Nearby, Great Falls and the city of Lancaster offer lodging, dining, and supply options, while Lake Wateree and Fishing Creek Lake provide additional camping and recreational facilities.
The area’s appeal is enhanced by historical locations like Andrew Jackson State Park and Landsford Canal State Park, which is well-known for its spider lilies and combines historical relevance with natural beauty. Great Falls Lake and Rocky Creek Lake are great places to kayak and fish if you’re looking for a peaceful outdoor getaway.
