Welcome to Horseshoe Lake AB

Horseshoe Lake, one of Jasper National Park’s hidden gems, offers stunning views with its clear blue waters and towering cliffs. Shaped like a lopsided ‘U,’ the lake’s name is fitting. Located near the Icefields Parkway, a small sign marks the lake’s entrance, just a five-minute walk from a nearby pull-off. Visitors are greeted with breathtaking views from the north end of the lake, with an unmaintained path for the adventurous to hike down the shoreline. The high cliffs and Mount Hardesty as a backdrop add to the lake’s aesthetic attractiveness.
Horseshoe Lake, situated about 20 miles south of Jasper, is known as the best local swimming hole. Despite the cold water coming from glacial melt, the lake attracts swimmers. However, thrill-seekers have been known to jump off the cliffs, a dangerous activity the park service discourages due to past accidents. The lake is excellent for fishing, particularly for rainbow trout. As motors are not allowed, anglers use float tubes, rowboats, canoes, and kayaks to fish. There are no inlets or outlets, with the lake fed by natural springs.
Amenities at Horseshoe Lake are minimal, with vault toilets in the parking area. Hiking paths, such as the Valley of the Five Lakes Trail, can be found in the vicinity a few miles north. The Park’s Wapiti Campground, with over 350 campsites, is nearby on the Athabasca River. Jasper, only five miles away, provides necessary supplies and entertainment.
Jasper National Park offers diverse activities, from cultural venues like the Jasper Yellowhead Museum to outdoor adventures such as downhill skiing, helicopter tours, snowmobile trails, and fishing guides. The Jasper Tramway, operating from April to November, provides aerial views of the park’s spectacular scenery. The park also features the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserve and the Columbia Icefield, with the Icefield Interpretive Centre offering guided tours.
