Welcome to Pomme de Terre Lake

Pomme de Terre Lake, located in the scenic west-central Missouri Ozarks, is a captivating and multifaceted destination named after the French term “Pomme de Terre,” which translates to “Apple of the Earth” or “potato.” This name likely stems from the potato-like plants, possibly Apios Americana or Potato Bean, found along the river’s banks, historically used as food by Indigenous peoples.
The Pomme de Terre Project was a major project approved by Congress in 1938 that was a component of the Missouri River Basin Comprehensive Flood Control Plan. This project gave birth to the expansive Pomme de Terre Lake. At its multipurpose pool level, the lake spans 7,820 acres but can expand to 16,100 acres during heavy rainfall, effectively controlling downstream flooding. The Pomme de Terre Dam, an impressive earth and rockfill embankment, features a heavily compacted clay core, making it virtually watertight. This engineering marvel, complete with a control tower and hydraulically operated gates, regulates water release, thereby reducing the force of downstream flows and ensuring the safety of the surrounding areas.
Pomme de Terre Lake is particularly noted for its outstanding fishing opportunities. It is one of the few places in Missouri that offers true muskellunge (muskie) fishing, attracting anglers nationwide. Other prevalent fish species include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, black crappie, spotted bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, white bass, white crappie, walleye, and bluegill. Fishing is permitted throughout the lake, and a small fee is charged for fishing at the State Park Marina.
The surrounding Pomme de Terre State Park, with locations on both the lake’s Pittsburg and Hermitage sides, provides many recreational activities. The park boasts over 250 campsites, making it ideal for multi-day visits. Visitors can enjoy two public swimming beaches, multiple hiking trails, and facilities for picnicking and boating. The park’s marina and boat ramps make it easy to launch into the water for a day of fishing or boating. The lake’s high-quality water and scenic surroundings offer a perfect backdrop for relaxing and enjoying various water activities.
Furthermore, Pomme de Terre Lake provides a natural habitat for a wide variety of species, making it a sanctuary for bird watching and wildlife observation. The lake is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy activities like hiking, swimming, boating, and fishing amidst the stunning natural scenery of the Missouri Ozarks because of its serene surroundings and wide range of services. The prospect of encountering various wildlife species adds an element of excitement to your visit.
Whether you are an avid angler, a boating enthusiast, or looking to unwind in nature, Pomme de Terre Lake offers a rich and varied experience. Its blend of recreational opportunities, natural beauty, and historical significance makes it a cherished destination in Missouri.
