The Pomme de Terre Dam, an impressive earth and rockfill embankment, features a heavily compacted clay core, making it virtually watertight. This engineering marvel, complete with a control tower and hydraulically operated gates, regulates water release, thereby reducing the force of downstream flows and ensuring the safety of the surrounding areas.

It is one of the few places in Missouri that offers true muskellunge (muskie) fishing, attracting anglers nationwide. Fishing is permitted throughout the lake, and a small fee is charged for fishing at the State Park Marina.
